Meet the people behind the bags…

Who are the Wayuu?

While traditionally semi-nomadic, many Wayuu have now settled in towns and cities, posing a threat to their traditional way of life. The Wayuu are skilled weavers, creating intricate designs and vibrant colors in their textiles.

Their language is Wayuunaiki, and they follow a matrilineal descent system. They practice a religion that combines traditional beliefs with Christianity. Known for their hospitality and strong sense of community, the Wayuu have persevered through centuries of challenges, managing to preserve their culture and maintain significance in Colombian and Venezuelan societies.

How Does the Wayuu Artisan Industry Start?

When Spanish colonizers occupied the La Guajira region in Colombia, the Wayuu women were taught to weave by the nuns. Although the women of the tribe already knew many weaving techniques passed down by their ancestors, crocheting provided them with new opportunities. Over time, they began to develop and expand their pattern book, known as The Kanaas.

Initially, the artisans focused solely on weaving traditional items. However, the need to integrate into the local economy pushed them to come up with fashionable garments. They succeeded in creating a simpler version of their traditional bag, featuring vibrant colors and a faster production process. This product caught the attention of people from different places, and its popularity has spread worldwide. It is now worn by prominent Hollywood figures, famous singers, members of royalty, and perhaps even by you!

The majority of Wayuu products are made by microenterprises that emerge in rural rancherías and cities. Wayuu artisans connect with buyers through markets, where they sell their bags. These individuals play a crucial role in the operation as they assemble the different pieces and continuously purchase products from the Wayuu. Some artisans are fortunate enough to have a Wayuu master who helps them establish contact with willing buyers who pay higher prices. Others choose their own marketing methods and try their luck in streets, small shops, and even on the internet.

How Are We Helping Wayuu Artisans?

We have created the Wayuu Craft Market, a secure virtual platform for buyers and sellers in La Guajira. We work closely with individual artisans and traders to provide them with a space where they can showcase and sell their traditional products.

In the Wayuu Market, artisans have full control over the prices of their products, ensuring that they are accessible to you. Furthermore, we give them a voice and share their stories within our company, ensuring that their culture and traditions prevail.

It is important to highlight that the Wayuu face a series of significant challenges. As one of the poorest indigenous groups in Latin America, they suffer from poverty, malnutrition, water scarcity, and the risk of contracting serious illnesses. Additionally, they face violence from armed groups and discrimination from non-indigenous people.

These problems threaten the preservation of Wayuu culture and traditions. While the Colombian government, the United Nations, and non-governmental organizations are working to address these issues, more support is needed.

Wayuu Market is a response to this need. Our online platform seeks to promote and support the Wayuu indigenous community by directly connecting Wayuu artisans with buyers from around the world. By providing them with business opportunities and helping improve their living conditions, we contribute to their community development and the preservation of their culture.

At Wayuu Market, we ensure that Wayuu artisans receive a fair price for their products. We eliminate intermediaries and work directly with the artisans, ensuring they benefit economically from their work.

When you purchase from the Wayuu Craft Market, you not only acquire authentic and high-quality products but also directly contribute to the well-being of the Wayuu community. Your support helps improve the artisans’ living conditions and fosters sustainable development in their region.

Join us in our commitment to support Wayuu artisans and promote their culture. Together, we can make a significant difference in their lives and contribute to a fairer and more equitable world.
